Is GoPlay11 legal in India? The short answer is that a free game is legal, but paid fantasy contests are not. Since 1 May 2026, any online game where you pay money hoping to win more counts as an online money game under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, and it is banned, whether it relies on skill or luck. Here’s what the Act and the 2026 Rules say, how they apply to GoPlay11 and what they mean for players.

The short answer

|---|---|
| Is paid fantasy cricket on GoPlay11 legal? | No. It’s an online money game, banned since 1 May 2026. |
| Is free fantasy cricket legal? | Yes. Free games with no cash stakes count as online social games. |

| Can banks process GoPlay11 deposits? | No. Payment facilitation for money games is prohibited. |
| Is the law final? | A challenge is pending before the Supreme Court. The ban applies unless the court stays it. |
What the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 says
Parliament passed the Act in August 2025. It splits online games into three groups:
- E-sports: competitive games played in multi-player formats, which the government wants to promote and register.
- Online social games: games played for entertainment or learning that don’t involve staking money to win money.
- Online money games: any game, whether based on skill, chance or both, that a user plays after paying fees, depositing money or other stakes, expecting to win money or other rewards.
The old argument that fantasy sport is a “game of skill” doesn’t help here. The Act bans online money games whatever the mix of skill and chance. Paid fantasy contests, rummy and poker for cash, and colour-prediction or “betting” apps all fall into this category.
What is banned
- Offering, operating or helping to run an online money game service.
- Advertising or promoting online money games, including through influencers and affiliate pages.
- Banks, payment apps and other financial institutions processing transactions for online money games.
Penalties
Offering an online money game can lead to up to three years in prison and a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Advertising one can lead to up to two years and a fine of up to ₹50 lakh. Payment facilitation carries penalties similar to offering. Repeat offences carry higher penalties. Authorities can also order websites and apps to be blocked.
What the 2026 Rules added
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 on 22 April 2026, and they came into force on 1 May 2026. The main points:
- Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI): an attached office of MeitY in New Delhi. It’s chaired by an Additional Secretary of MeitY, with members from the Home, Finance, Information and Broadcasting, Sports and Law ministries.
- Determination: the OGAI can decide whether a particular game counts as an online money game, and it keeps a list of such games.
- Registration: online social games and e-sports can be registered. Certificates are valid for up to ten years.
- User safety and grievances: registered providers must offer safety features, a grievance redressal system and keep certain data.
- Appeals: appeals against the Authority’s orders go to the MeitY Secretary within thirty days.
How this applies to GoPlay11
GoPlay11 is promoted online mainly as a fantasy cricket app with paid contests and cash prizes. Under the Act, that model is an online money game. As of November 2026 we found:
- No GoPlay11 registration as an online social game or e-sport.
- No named operator, company address or grievance officer.
- No current Google Play or App Store listing for a GoPlay11 fantasy app.
A purely free GoPlay11 game, with no deposits, entry fees or cash prizes, would be a different matter. Any page asking Indian users to deposit, “recharge” or pay entry fees for GoPlay11 contests is promoting an activity the law bans. For the safety side, see our GoPlay11 real or fake check.
What it means for players
- You’re unlikely to be prosecuted for playing, but you have no protection. If an unregistered app keeps your money, there’s no licensed operator or regulator to recover it from.
- Payments may fail or be reversed. Banks and UPI apps are required to block these transactions.
- Websites and APKs can disappear overnight after blocking orders, taking your balance with them.
The Supreme Court challenge
Several gaming companies challenged the Act, arguing that it unfairly bans skill-based games and harms a legitimate industry. The cases were moved to the Supreme Court and are still pending. Until the court rules otherwise, the Act and the 2026 Rules apply in full. We’ll update this page when there’s a hearing or a decision.
